In their song Butts Wigglin, Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip addresses the sound of Patent Approval. It's said to be sweet, which is something every patent attorney can certainly confirm!
The lyrics are quite repetitive and may be interpreted to criticize too easy granting of patents for drugs:
The sweet sound of patent approval comin' down in a not quite fog The sweet sound of patent approval comin' down in powdery sparks The sweet sound of patent approval comin' down with holiday concern The sweet sound of patent approval comin' down in a world of hurt In my opinion, the drug is ready
However, the song is a part of the soundtrack of the 1996 Canadian comedy film Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy. The film deals with the introduction of an antidepressant drug which becomes rapidly successful. The song's central lyric "In my opinion the drug is ready" seems to be lifted from this film.
Anyway, this is another great example of how IP terms are regularly addressed in songs and storylines in the entertainment industry.
